One of my favorite mac games was this shareware game called Escape Velocity. We used to spend a LOT of time playing this in middle school or elementary school I can’t remember. But it was life. I only recently discovered that the FOSS community basically recreated it.
I’ve put an hour or two into it and I love it. There’s a few controls missing. Right now my biggest frustration is that you can’t orient yourself to a ship and I’m pretty sure that used to be an option. So you could target a ship and then press a key to orient and then fly out. But there’s been a lot of QoL improvements over the OG jumping multiple systems and then landing can be done with a single keypress and it’s kinda cool. Even landing has been smoothed out. I don’t even use the inverse key any more to go 180 from momentum to slow down.

Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game similar to the classic Escape Velocity series. Explore other star systems. Earn money by trading, carrying passengers, or completing missions. Use your earnings to buy a better ship or to upgrade the weapons and engines on your current one. Blow up pirates. Take sides in a civil war. Or leave human space behind and hope to find friendly aliens whose culture is more civilized than your own.
